Putrid Performance Perilous vs. Panthers

Nationally ranked Iowa was upset Tuesday night, 78-76, by an unlikely opponent, UNI. A twelve point favorite, Iowa struggled against the mid-major program from Cedar Falls. Make no mistake, Iowa didn't deserve to win this game.

The smell in Cedar Falls last night was the Hawkeyes performance against UNI. The Panthers played extremely hard the entire game while the Hawks' effort was not always evident. The cries of "Overrated, overrated" from the UNIdome crowd should reverberate through the minds of these Hawks the rest of the week.

Northern Iowa is a nice little mid-major team, but certainly not of Big Ten caliber. The loss in Cedar Falls should serve as a wake-up call for a team that is stuggling for it's identity.

Reggie Evans had a double double of 16 points and 16 boards while Luke Recker added 21 points. But the Hawkeyes superior size and strength was clearly outmatched by the hard nosed Panthers.

This was a brutal game for Hawkeye fans to have to watch this early in the season. One must remember how early in the season it is, though. Now Coach Alford will face a tough test in his early coaching career as he tries to get this team turned around, especially for the heated in-state battle this weekend versus Iowa State.
