ISU Pregame: McMahon & Babineaux

Seniors Pete McMahon and Jonathan Babineaux look to key the lines on each side of the ball in this week's big showdown with the Cyclones. Read what each player had to say about his Week 1 performance, what he sees for this Saturday, and more in this premium Q&A.

Is this Iowa State defense maybe better than some people gave it credit for before last week?

Yeah. It seems to be that they are a lot better than everybody expected. They did a great job last week against UNI. After seeing them on film, they'll be pretty tough.

What did you see on film?

A lot of guys running around; a lot of speed; guys playing hard; just a good intensity level.

Did you ever consider going to Iowa State?

No, I didn't.

As a senior, does this Iowa State game carry and added significance?

Oh yeah, it does. It always does when it's your last one. This is a big interstate rivalry. So, it's a pretty big deal. We won last year, and we want to continue winning. It is more significant.

Was that like a gorilla off of your backs last year?

Yeah. Kind of. But it kind of maybe is a little bit tougher this year because now we have something to lose where as we didn't in the past. But I think we'll be able to hold onto it pretty good.

Do you expect big improvements on the offensive line this week? They say that the biggest improvements come between Week 1 and 2.

We'll be able to improve a lot. Last week, I felt like we played pretty well as a unit. But there's all kind of stuff that we need to improve on.

Is it mostly cohesion? Coach said that this unit really only started working together last week.

It's just getting back to our fundamentals and how each guy works with each other. You just kind of have to get the feel of it. Things go from there.

How sweet was it to beat ISU last year?

It's sweet every time you win. That's the foremost thing that you're trying to do is to win. So, that was a good win for our program.

They kicked UNI around. How do you feel about this game?

I feel that it's going to be a very competitive game. Both teams are going to come in and give it their all.

Saturday, they started to call players numbers out when they're penalized. What do you think about that?

It's kind of funny that your number is being called out, but I think it's good instead of just saying it's a defensive foul. It would be better that the number was called because you know it was on that person.

Some personal fouls were called. You were involved in some. Is that something you have to watch now?

No, I just got caught up in the moment. I know that I had a couple of personal fouls. I don;t think you're going to see that from me again.

Their defense is rated No. 1 in the country. Would you like to prove that yours is better than theirs?

I'll just let the stats take care of that. They play the way that they play, and we're going to play the way that we play. We'll see.
