Opening Statement: This was a very good win for our program. Our defense let down a little bit tonight. That's a little disappointing, but I'm very happy with our rebounds. We did a great job on the boards, both crashing and boxing out.
It's fun with this team because every night somebody different is rising to the occasion. Tonight, Jo had a tremendous game; shot extremely well from the 3-point range; just was in very good control out there.
Jenna his the big three for us when we only have the one-point lead; just steps up with incredible confidence and knows down that three.
Crystal's second effort, I mean, the effort to save that ball going out of bounds on the offensive rebound and keep that possession in our favor and then scoring off of that, that was an incredible play, too.
Again, tremendous effort by our basketball team. Marquette played extremely well. They're a very dangerous basketball team. They have a lot of weapons, too. They have so many different people that can shoot the ball well. We could just never put them away. We'd get a 10, 12 point lead and could just never close the book on them. That's to their credit that they just kept fighting back and kept fighting back.
I'm happy with only 12 turnovers against a pressing team. We handled that pretty well tonight. We're going to have to do that again Friday night against Creighton.
You said that you weren't afraid of your team's 3-point shooting. Are you being proven right?
The first half it was pretty good. We had some nice open looks. They were doubling off of our outside players and letting us have the outside shot. Our posts did a nice job of reading that and getting the ball to our guards. And they made the open threes. We did a nice job with that.
Were you surprised that they didn't abandon that zone?
Well, that's their favorite defense and that's the one that they have the most confidence with. I don't know if they felt they could stop our inside game going player-to-player. That's a little bit what they were worried about.
Jamie goes 7 for 9 from the field. She's tough to stop one-on-one. I don't know their team as well as they do.
They had cut it to a point there and there was a timeout. Did you say something in the timeout because they seemed to come out with a little more intensity?
We talked a lot about defense in that timeout more than anything else; playing hard and having intense defense in that last few minutes. That was a huge three by Jenna.
Do you guys talk about having the best start in nine years, which was a team that went to the Sweet 16?
We talk about being 7-0. We talk about being undefeated because we're proud of it and we're excited about it. It gives us confidence.
But we don't compare it to other teams, the '95 team or anything like that, and what their end result was. We're just really focusing on this team and what we can accomplish. Right now, all we're thinking about is Creighton and getting ready for that game.
Did you anticipate having this kind of depth? You outscored them 20-5 off the bench tonight?
I'm not certain, but I think we've won every bench (battle) so far. I think we're outscored our opponents in bench points in every one of our games.
We've got Jenna coming off able to hit the three, but also Morgan Kasperek is coming off and playing great minutes. Stacy Schlapkohl in the last game.
It's someone different almost every night, which is really a lot of fun. That's really a strength of our team. We can go to our bench and do well with that.
Have you ever hit a bigger three in your life than that one?
Yeah. Last year (the game-winner at Marquette). They're probably glad they'll never see me again.
What were you thinking when you shot that?
I don't really look at the scoreboard unless it's a timeout. I really didn't look at the scoreboard until the next timeout. So, I had no idea. So, to me, it was just any other shot.
You hit a lot of 3-pointers tonight. Do you have a lot of confidence in you perimeter game?
Yeah, I do more this year than I did last year. I'm more relaxed and more calm this year. I'm trying to take smarter shots and not getting so down in myself when I miss a shot.
Is it easier for you to score with everyone else around you playing better on offense?
Yeah. It is a lot easier because they can't double in on me, and if they do, (our guards) are going to score. It's a win-win situation.
Did you expect to be 7-0 at this point?
It's really hard to anticipate having a perfect season so far. We knew that we were going to be in such a tough tournament. You always want it. But it's hard to actually think it would be like this.
I knew the whole time that people were going to have to step up. I didn't know it was going to be how it is now, though. I'm elated that it's how it is now with everybody stepping up at different times. Nobody is scared to be a leader out there.
