The Shadow on Recruiting

I pried the Dark One away from his Chicago style deep dish pizza at the Wig & Pen long enough to get some hot recruiting news from him. I could hear him take swigs out of his mug of Amber Bock as I tried to keep pace with his staccatto oratory. Naturally, I told owner Dick Querry to bill The Shadow's food and brewskis to me as Dick knows my Visa number better than I do. It was worth it! Feast on...............

1. Lester Erb is flying to Arkansas today to see WR Chris Baker, the Touchdown Maker. Erb is trying his best to convince Baker that Hawks fly while Hogs only run. Baker has both hands and wheels so Erb will be doing his best to make sure Chris doesn't hollar "Sooey"!

2. Erb will be racking up some more frequent flyer miles on Monday when he jets to Palm Beach, Florida to visit the Garden of Hostile, Mobile and Agile. School is out due to Martin Luther King Day but that won't deter Lester from his appointed targets. Brandon White and Jerramy Scott could form the most dynamic duo from the same high school at Iowa since Ronnie Harmon and Devon Mitchell made the trek from New York City. Both of these players could see early playing time at Iowa.

3. We will not accept fallbacks at the OL positions. Coach Ferentz and Coach Philbin grade OL prospects better than anyone in the country. Ask Jonathon Ogden about Kirk. Therefore, if Iowa offers Chris Thomas, the 6-3, 295 pound lineman from Cumberland Valley High School in PA, don't think he is not an 'A' player. Chris's visit was not due to the latest reports of Jon Cochran leaning to Stanford.

4. The staff had planned to bring in a JUCO DE for a visit. Ironically, just a year after the Kahari Stewart medical problem, a supposed heart murmur might have caused cancellation of that visit.

5. The staff is looking at a DE in Florida that happens to be a good friend of Abdul Hodge and Darius Butler. He is the 6'3 195 DE we reported earlier on the Football Recruiting Forum. The prospect needs to improve his test score, however.

6. Iowa Baseball Coach Scotty Broghammer was asked to help with another of the remaining targets on the Hawk's list. Could this be Justin Woody a DE/RP from Tallahassee Lincoln?

7. Larrey 'Buddy' Williams, DB, Tallahassee Lincoln was supposed to have visited on January 21st-23rd. However, he has verbaled to Clemson. This may indicate how close the staff has come on DB's this year, going back to Fabian Washington. So when are the Hawks going to catch a break? The staff might as well put a classified in the USA TODAY alluding to the playing time that is available.
