Some Hawk fans found it very odd to see the staff drop Levonne Rowan from their target list in the past week, however, there was a good reason behind it. The staff decided to go in a different direction by offering his teammate 5'10 170 DB Jovon Johnson. While Rowan had more offers, many coaches in the Erie area that HTO spoke with had very good things to say about Jovon, even suggesting he could be the best prospect from Mercyhurst.
"I will be visiting Iowa this weekend," Jovon said. I just recently set-up the visit as Iowa really started recruiting me heavily just in the last three weeks. I started receiving interest from them back in early December."
Jovon only has one other offer, that being from Kent State. Why did many of the schools only recruit Levonne?
"I'm not totally sure, but I had a very big senior season. Levonne was the star our junior season, but I really picked things up this year. Many did not throw Levonne's way thinking they could take advantage of me, but I was able to get ten interceptions. I should have had twelve, but I caught one of out of bounds and the other was so easy, I just dropped it!"
Jovon also will have no problem qualifying, with a 3.6 GPA and 900 on SAT. Also, Jovon did impress many with his senior season. In fact, he only allowed one reciever to score on him all year.
"Jovon Williams from Strong Vincent here in Erie was the toughest receiver for me to go against. He is only a junior and about 6'2 175 so Iowa may recruit him next year. He was the only one to score on me all year long."
So what seperates Jovon from other cornerbacks?
"I would have to say my break on the ball. I have real quick feet so I play up on the line. Once I get my hands on things, I'm usually in pretty good shape."
Well, the Hawks could be putting themselves in good hands this weekend with a commitment from Jovon, which is seeming very likely. Jovon definitely would have the chance to step in next year alongside Richie Williams to compete for early playing time.
