Mike Elgin was told he was being brought in on an official visit in part of Iowa's efforts to add a few preferred walk-ons from in-state. However, before Mike left to return home, he quickly found himself with a full ride scholarship and a commitment to play football at the University of Iowa.
"Sunday morning, my parents and I were talking to Coach Ferentz about a variety of issues, inclduing my plans," Mike stated. "Then, all of a sudden it got quiet, and Coach Ferentz informed me that I had a full ride scholarship. I about fell out of my chair."
In fact, many Hawk fans probably about fell out of their chair when reading the news, also. However, the proven past of in-state prospects who possess good frames becoming quality contributors at Iowa, has quickly gotten Hawk fans excited about their latest commitment.
"I'm going to play linebacker or defensive end at Iowa next season. I just plan on working very hard and doing whatever I can to help out the team. I will work my hardest to prove people wrong."
It is that same attitude that likely impressed Coach Ferentz and staff this past weekend. Mike also will add some very good intelligence to the team, carrying a 3.87 GPA and 29 on the ACT.
Hawk fans will like the fact that Mike is a proven winner. This past season, he helped lead Western Dubuqe High School to the 3A State Championship. In fact, Mike definitely was the star of the team.
"I had 189 tackles this past season. Twenty of them were for a loss."
Those are some very dominating stats, even for the state of Iowa. Now Mike and the staff at Iowa will try to bring that winning attitude over as Iowa continues to head back to the top of the BigTen.
