HN.com Scouting Report: Cincinnati Bearcats

Scouting the Bearcats

Cincinnati did not win at least a share of their conference title for just the second time in the last 10 years. They earned their 14th consecutive invite to the NCAA tourney.

They started Conference USA regular season play with a record of 6-4, but won their final six games.

The Bearcats went 21-1 against teams outside the RPI Top 50 and 3-5 against RPI top 50 teams. They began the year 11-0 before falling to Illinois.

Opponents shot just 37 percent against Cincy this year, tops in college basketball.

SCOUTING REPORT

As is the case with most Bob Huggins coached Bearcat teams, Cincy looks to establish its low-post game as their primary scoring option. They do not shoot the three-point shot very well (.347) so you might see Iowa use some zone defense in spurts. A key for the Hawkeyes is to keep their post players, namely Greg Brunner, out of early foul trouble. Maxiell and Hicks are not good foul shooters, but they get to the line quite a bit…if Iowa can establish an inside game and get some early fouls on Cincy's big men, the Bearcats will be in trouble, as they are not a deep team…they are athletic and big in the backcourt as well, so Iowa's guard-post inversion with Adam Haluska might not be successful…if there is one team from the Big Ten that they are most like, it would be Michigan State.
