Felder Ready to Surprise

Chris Felder never had any hesitation in being a Hawkeye. In fact, Chris has not paid much attention to the media and the talk about this 02' recruiting class. Chris is ready to join his class and other teammates in making Iowa a BigTen contender once again. First, Chris will try to get off on a winning start by winning the state championship in wrestling.

OL Chris Felder had himself a good weekend by winning sectionals this past Friday as he will now advance to districts with the Oelwein wrestling team.

"I am 12-1 this season," Chris said. "I won sectionals and now have I finish in the top two out of four guys at districts. I have a good chance of making state. I was playing basketball, but I decided to change to wrestling in the middle of the season."

That move actually may have made the staff a little happier with Chris as they have shared the theme that wrestling will help lineman in their toughness and techinique. Also, Chris's conditioning appears to be ideal for himself as he will enter summer work-outs with Coach Doyle.

"I'm at 277 right now for wrestling. It will be easy for me to put back on the pounds, but I feel a little more sculpted right now."

Chris was the 3rd verbal commitment for the Hawks back in late October. Early commitments always have to put the question in the back of Hawk fan's minds on whether there is ever any thought of visiting other schools. This was not the case for Chris.

"I really did not have any schools contact me after my verbal, but I also never really gave any thought to visiting another school. I thought this recruiting class was pretty good for Iowa. It will be pretty interesting to see how it pans out as we got a lot of late sleepers."

Chris was hosted by the state's top recruit last year on his official visit, with that being Blake Larsen.

"I got along with Blake very well. All the freshman lineman were real good guys. I think I will fit in pretty good with them. I'm left handed so I imagine that I will be playing on the right side of the line."

Of course, everyone knows Felder was a teammate of another Hawk commit, LB Ryan Majerus. However, Chris also competed against another Hawk commit in LB Mike Elgin, who starred for Western Dubuque. Oelwein was defeated by Western Dubuque in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.

"We missed a 20 yard field goal with .03 seconds left and they won the game in overtime. Mike played pretty well as he got a lot of tackles since they blitzed him on every down. He was really able to play off blocks. I think Majerus and he are very similar players."

Hawk fans will get the chance to see if that holds true and to see a very intimidating OL with the young guys the Hawks currently have. Chris displayed black and gold throughout the whole recruiting process. The Hawks definitely got one of their main targets in OL Chris Felder.
