Carufel Still Closed Lipped; Talks Iowa

St. Paul (Minn.) offensive lineman Matt Carufel (6-5, 288, 5.3) still declines to name favorites. He claims 13 total offers including: LSU, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Iowa (first to offer), Minnesota, Florida, Miami, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Washington, Nebraska, Michigan and Michigan State.

"I don't have a top five or a leader at this time," said Carufel, from Cretin-Derham Hall High School.

"But, right now I'd say that I've got interest in Notre Dame, Iowa, Minnesota, Florida and Miami.

"I like Notre Dame because of their great academics. I was there for their JR Day and when I met the coaching staff there, I didn't expect them all to be so good. I was really impressed with all of them and how they are running things now.

"I think Notre Dame has got some great facilities and their weight room is second to none," he said. "Plus, we've had a lot of students and players from my high school that have gone there, so I think it could be a good fit for me.

"Iowa has some really good weight training facilities. Coach (Kirk) Ferentz has put in quite a system over there. They're going to be one of the top programs in the country soon, and I like how they put a lot of O-linemen into the NFL. That's a big plus.

"I like Minnesota because all the coaches there seem like people you could be around that wouldn't yell at you. I feel that I work better with coaches like that. And they're only about 20 miles away. Minnesota is a beautiful place. I'd like to continue fishing and hunting while I'm in college, so I think that it would be a great place to be also," said Carufel.

"I took an unofficial visit to Florida about a month ago when I was on spring break. The coaching staff there reminded me of the coaching staff at Notre Dame--they put some of the best guys they could find on that staff. The Swamp had to be the biggest stadium that I'd ever seen. It would be amazing to play there. The city of Gainesville is great and I've got a good feeling about their program. I really wouldn't mind going there.

"I think that Miami has the most beautiful campus that I've ever seen. It would be a real good place for me to go and study biology. And my high school OL coach, Andy Bischoff, is really good friends with coach (Art) Kehoe (offensive line). That kind of connection could really help me out, and I think that coach Kehoe would be a good coach for me," he said.

"I don't know when I'm going to be ready to commit to a school. I'm going to wait until I know where I really want to go before I decide."

Carufel has taken in JR Day' at Notre Dame, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. He's also taken unofficial visits to Florida and Miami.
