Illinois WR Marques Wilkins Racking Up Offers

Decatur (Ill.) MacArthur receiver Marques Wilkins (6-1, 185) has six offers to date, and most of his attention has come from the Midwest. "My offers are from Illinois, Duke, Michigan State, Purdue, Ball State and Wisconsin, and I'm hearing from Iowa, Stanford, UCLA and Notre Dame, too," said Wilkins.

Wilkins commented on the two West Coast schools: "I've gotten a few letters from Stanford, but UCLA has been sending me a lot of stuff. They haven't offered me yet, but I'm hearing from them a lot. I have a strong interest in them. They have a good football program and it's a good education."

Wilkins said he hasn't begun to narrow his college choices down, wanting to see some more scholarship offers before he does. And he thinks his performances at the recent Nike Camp in Ann Arbor and the Scout Combine in Champaign will mean an increase in interest. "After my performance at the Nike Camp (this past weekend), Michigan State offered me. I think people are finally starting to see what I can do."

Wilkins clocked a laser-timed 4.6 at both camps, and benched his weight (185) 26 times, while clocking a 4.2 shuttle and jumping 33 inches.

"I've been really working on my strength, and benching my weight 26 times was a result of that," said Wilkins.

Where he felt he did the best was in the 1-on-1s, where he dropped one pass in the two camps combined. "And the one I dropped, I'm still bitter about," he said.

During his junior year, Wilkins injured his hamstring in the sixth game, but up to that point he recorded 600 yards rushing and 600 yards receiving with 12 touchdowns coming on the ground and 5 more by air. On defense, he had 4 interceptions, taking one back for a touchdown.

"I used to be a shutdown corner, and now I'm playing free safety. My future is probably at receiver. But if defense gets me on the field first, I'll play there."

Wilkins said he originally wanted to make an early decision. He wasn't sure that he would get many offers, but as they have started to comein now, he's planning to wait. He said, "I think my performance at the camps will get me some more exposure, so I'm going to wait."

Academics will be a huge selling point for a school to get Wilkins. He is carrying a 3.7 GPA and will take the ACT next month. "I'm going to qualify the first time," he said.
