Smith, from Glenville High School, recently completed a tour of camps with his team that included stops at Iowa, Wisconsin, Purdue, Illinois, Indiana, Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan and Toledo.
"I've got heavy interest in Iowa at this point," said Smith. "I just really like the way the coaches coach their players there. I got to meet coach (Norm) Parker (def coord/linebackers) and he's a real great guy. They've also got a great weight room and great facilities as well. I didn't get much time to see a lot of other things about the school, but from what I did see, I just think things out there are great.
"The rest of my list includes Toledo, Eastern Michigan and Michigan State (no offer). I already know all of the coaches, and I'm familiar with the program at Toledo, because my uncle, Tarvares Bolden, played quarterback there. They've got a great campus there and they've got my major--Sports Medicine. I also like the atmosphere there too," he said.
"The coaches at Eastern Michigan are great guys and they're really into their players. I had a great time at their camp, but in the three days I was there, I didn't get to see as much as I would have liked to," he said.
"I'm going to get out to Michigan State for camp soon, so I think they'll offer me when I get there.
"Most of these programs are looking at me as both a linebacker and a strong safety. I prefer playing strong safety when I get to school," he said.
"I know I want to take my official visits and commit to a program closer to the end of the season," he said.
"I'm good at staying focused and staying calm on the field. I'm also a good leader out there as well. I want to work on being more of a playmaker this season. That's my main focus right now."
