Aaron Spears Begins His Visits

Aaron Spears, the 6-9, 245 pound center from Chicago Dunbar High School is taking his first visit this weekend. Although he may take all five allowed visits, we know where he is starting. Could the Hawkeyes be his first and most successful visit?

You may call this a pivotal weekend for Steve Alford and the Iowa Hawkeyes as Aaron Spears, the 6-9 center from Chicago Dunbar is visiting Iowa City.

Aaron has shown great discipline in the last year as he has lost 40 pounds to get into tremendous basketball shape for his senior season. Although he verbaled to Ohio State last summer, he declined their written tender during the early signing period last fall.

His improved physical conditioning contributed to a tremendous senior season. According to his coach, Fate Mickel, "Aaron averaged 24 points a game along with 13-14 rebounds and a couple of blocked shots!"

Spears would provide instant inside help for Iowa next season should he choose to become a Hawkeye. In addition, his recruitment could allow Steve Alford to redshirt Jared Reiner as Spears would give Iowa a third big man to go with Sean Sonderleiter and Erik Hansen.

Reiner could use the year to grow into his huge frame and improve his mental aspect of the game. Do not take this as being negative at all about Jared. As Pete Newell said recently "Many big men don't begin to reach their potential until they are out of college." Therefore, giving Reiner a year to eat, lift and study will only progress his development.

Spears will also visit Illinois and they remain the top team to beat for his services. Other suitors include Louisville, Miami, Indiana, Oregon and Marquette.
