When speaking to a source earlier this winter, I was surprised to hear of an offer going out to in-state prospect LB Mike Klinkenborg as I had not heard of this prospect from Rock Rapids, IA. However, there was much emphasis put on how good this source felt this prospect is. Now, after speaking to Mike and hearing of some of his accomplishments, it is not hard for me to envision why my source sounded so confident.
"Right now I'm just rehabbing from my surgery that I had a month ago," Mike said. "It is called a sports hernia as I was operated on around my groin area. It is something a lot of Nebraska football players get from going too deep on squats."
Obviously, a little help with techinique from Coach Doyle could end up paying huge dividends.
"Iowa is currently my only offer. I visited there for a Junior Day in Feburary for the Michigan basketball game. The coaches are real nice to talk to and were straightforward with me. I really liked the weight room, and in fact, everything there was very nice."
With Rock Rapids, IA having produced prospects for Iowa before, has Mike seen himself in black and gold for a while now?
"Yeah I did grow up as a Hawkeye fan. Roger Meyer played a pretty big role, especially since I'm teammates and classmates with his brother, 6'4 270 OL/DL Rick Meyer. However, I'm not sure that I want to make my decision early, though."
So what other schools are showing interest in Mike currently?
"Northwestern, Kansas State, Iowa State, Wisconsin, Colorado, and Minnesota are all writing me. I won't be able to make NIKE Camp because of my rehab, but I hopefully will make Northwestern's camp in late June."
Certainly, you gotta believe more schools are on their way with offers for Mike, and likely already would have if it had not been for his recent surgery. Mike is a tremendous athlete at LB, having high jumped 6'7 and ran an 11.3 in the 100 meters. That is athletic ability you just cannot coach, and you better believe the Hawkeyes will be looking forward to that if they are able to land his services.
