Baytown Lee's Cleveland Has New Co-Leader

Iowa has offered a scholarship to Baytown (Texas) Lee wide receiver James Cleveland. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder, had the Hawkeyes at the top of his wish list until he was named most valuable player of a 7-on-7 passing tournament in College Station, Texas. Now there's a co-leader for Cleveland's services.

"Right now my offers are from Arizona, Illinois, Northwestern, UTEP, Arizona State, Tulane, Missouri, Iowa, SMU, Houston and Texas A&M." James Cleveland said.

"My favorites are Iowa, LSU, Oklahoma, Florida, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State. Iowa was definitely my leader for a long time but that was until Texas A&M offered me.

"I really didn't hear anything from A&M until after I was named MVP of a 7-on-7 tournament that was actually at Texas A&M.

"With Texas A&M offering now, I'd say that it has set things back a little bit for me now and it has made me think."

Baytown (Lee) has a couple of prospects already playing for the Hawkeyes. Quarterback Drew Tate and cornerback Charles Godfrey both played for Dick Olin at Lee. Has Cleveland had the chance to speak with Tate or Godfrey?

"I actually talk to both Drew and Charles," Cleveland said. "Drew just told me that he wants me to come visit and that's what I'm going to do. My Iowa official visit will be September 2nd.

"Iowa has a great program. The Sporting News listed Iowa as one of the best stadiums. Iowa has crazy fans. Drew and Charles talk about the atmosphere all the time. Iowa has great coaches and they've become one of the best programs in the country."

Cleveland had 75 receptions for 985 yards as a junior and was named all-district. We asked Coach Olin what Cleveland brings to the table as a D-1 wide receiver.

"James is very fluid and extremely smart." Olin said. "He runs precise routes and understands space and secondary coverage. James is the type of receiver that just looks good running. He's got a lot of high knee action. He's definitely a good one."

Cleveland camped at Iowa and SMU. He'll be a three-year varsity starter in '05 and also letters in track.
