Iwebema, DL Looks to Improve

Interview transcript with Ken Iwebema

Q: What did you think of the scrimmage?

Ken Iwebema: We have a lot of things done. We saw a lot of good things. There are still some things to work on.

Q: The defensive line looked pretty good.

Iwebema: We were doing OK, but we still have a lot of things to work on.

Q: What do you need to work on?

Iwebema: Just getting better, separating…the basics. We have to keep reinforcing that. In the long run, that will help us win games.

Q: The line as a whole does not have a lot of size, but you are quick.

Iwebema: We are pretty quick. We get the job done.

Q: What do you think of the locker rooms?

Iwebema: I saw them. They are beautiful, I like them. Everybody is talking about that. It looks good.

Q: Are you surprised to see how many fans showed up here for a practice?

Iwebema: To be honest, this is a practice and we have so many people here. I heard there were 20,000 here. That is a lot of people for a practice.

Q: Do you feel that the DL is farther ahead of where you thought might be at this point?

Iwebema: I couldn't tell you that, because all I am thinking of is getting better. As a line standpoint, I do think we have gotten better and stronger.

Q: Are you holding your own against ones?

Iwebema: Yes.

Q: Do you feel the rotation will be situational or just to get fresh bodies out there?

Iwebema: We have to learn some different situations, but for practices, we have lines set up so they will go for a while, then maybe sub. Right now, we are just going at it.

Q: What have you liked out of your group so far?

Iwebema: We have been doing pretty good in all areas, to be honest. We have made some mistakes, but we have shown signs of improvement.

Q: Do you think of all the anxiousness surrounding the line is misplaced to an extent?

Iwebema: I don't know. I am not real good at telling you what other people are thinking. Everybody was concerned about who was going to step up, but coach Ferentz preaches it every season; next man in. We have four people to replace and all we are trying to do is get better and step up.

Q: Do you use that as motivation to prove people wrong?

Iwebema: I am not worried about other people. I am trying to do the best that I can to help this team win. All four of us, every man that is on that field in a three-point stance is trying to help this team win.

Q: Do you think the DL is underrated?

Iwebema: We haven't stepped on the field. They can rate us all they want, it doesn't really matter. I am not too good at this stuff.

Q: What do you think about the OL, did their play concern you today?

Iwebema: I wasn't paying attention to the offensive linemen. I was just going after it.

Q: You guys had some pretty nice plays out there.

Iwebema: We made some plays. I can't really say anything about the offensive line, because I don't know what they are doing. All I know that as a defensive line, we are trying to get through practice making plays. If we do that against our line, we do it. But every once in a while, they get us.

Q: Are you happy with yourself?

Iwebema: I don't think that I did as well as I would have liked.

Q: What will it take with you to be a part of the rotation?

Iwebema: Just consistency. That is all the coaches look for when camp starts. We practice and do what it takes.

Q: Have you been practicing well?

Iwebema: I think that I have been doing alright.
