Inside The LockerRoom

Spring is nearing an end, and the Hawkeye summer heat is approaching. Optimism for the upcoming football season and curiousity for the upcoming basketball season have the winds swirling in Iowa City this summer. Get all the latest Hawkeye tidbits and inside information from Josh Clark.

Chad Greenway's ACL tear is disappointing as he was showing a lot of promise for this fall, but will also give Matt Roth a chance to finally prove whether he belongs at LB or not. Matt will now be in the two deeps this fall and if he does not emerge as a guy the staff feels will always stay there, I would expect a position change. Coach Ferentz has been saying on the I-club circuits that Matt is still having problems picking up the defensive system, and if after two seasons he is not showing any better promise as a MLB, then DE might be his best position.

Jermelle Lewis had another rough semester in the classroom. He will need to do well in summer school to make sure he is once again on the team this fall. This fall could also be Jermelle's last chance in proving that he belongs on the team and deserves to be a starting RB at Iowa. He has all the promise and potential in the world, but he has to start living up to expectations and carry a larger load of responsibility. If he doesn't pick up this fall, freshman Justise Hairston could quickly pass him by.

Also, with the uncertainity of depth at the RB position, it is no surprise to learn of the Hawkeyes looking at some transfer possibilites. Right now, rumors are running wild that they are working on RB Terrence Freeney, originally from Cedar Falls. has not confirmed anything on that situation. However, we were the first to break former Vanderbilt and Ft. Lauderdale RB Ray Perkin's name to Hawkeye fans and he could be a guy to still keep an eye out for. He would bring some SEC speed that we thought we had in WR Chris Baker last winter to this team if the staff decides to add him.

The men's basketball team has a far heavier load in the weight room this spring after this disappointing season. Weight Coach Bill Maxwell has kind of gone back to the old school in his regimen. Before, the players mainly worked on the stomach area and did a lot of pull-ups and sit-ups. Now, Coach Maxwell has them going through the rigors of lifting and a much more intense work-out. Many players have been complaining during indvidual work-outs that they are sore and tired, but the coaches feel good about that since it makes them have to work through adversity. They feel this is helping make the team a lot stronger.

Clemson will host Iowa in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge this year. Iowa will also be on the road for a game at Tulsa, who is expected to be ranked pretty highly. Iowa will once again host Missouri, Iowa State, and Northern Iowa. They are also expecting to host the Black Coaches Association tournament this year.

The women's basketball team will be featured on national television this year in a game against Kansas State. The date of the game happens to be on January 5th, which I believe is an awesome choice. It happens to be my birthday, also!

There has been more promise this season with the Hawkeye baseball team than in a very long time. Could this help secure Coach Broghammer's job for one more season?
