Stanzi Commits to Iowa

Joe Stanzi informed Scout.com's Josh Clark he was the first to be informed that his son, Rick, had given the Iowa Hawkeyes a verbal commitment on Friday evening. Stanzi is the 16th known verbal commitment for the Hawkeyes in the Class of 2006.

HERE IS A STORY ON RICK THURSDAY EVENING BEFORE NEWS ARRIVED THAT HE HAD GIVEN THE HAWKEYES A VERBAL COMMITMENT. STANZI HAS CANCELED HIS OFFICIAL VISIT TO PURDUE:

After taking his official visit to Iowa on the weekend of December 16th, it was unknown whether Stanzi would have a decision made around this time or would elect to take an official visit to Purdue on the weekend of January 13th. After meeting with Boilermaker quarterback coach Blaine Bennett last evening, Joe Stanzi, Rick's father, says as of right now the visit will occur "Since we attended Purdue's quarterback last summer, it makes it a little easier to visit Purdue," Mr. Stanzi stated.

"Opportunity exists at Purdue, and it is a good situation for any quarterback to enter with their offense. Right now, Rick would potentially be looking at being their #3 quarterback next fall. We have a great comfort with Coach Bennett after spending three days with him, in which, he worked with Rick. It was great being able to see how he works with quarterbacks, and just watching him run drills."

The two other schools under the most consideration, currently, are the Iowa Hawkeyes and Miami(OH) Redhawks.

Hawkeye offensive coordinator Ken O'Keefe made his way by Mentor Lake Catholic today to talk with the Stanzi's.

"Coach O'Keefe spent some time talking more offense with Rick, and really just wanted to continue to express how badly they want to land Rick in this class," Stanzi said.

"There is no doubt that Iowa has recruited Rick harder than any other school. They have been very methodical and consistent. It's like putting toghether a puzzle with them because they have taken every correct step and done everything the right way thus far. They have done their homework in recruiting Rick."

After meeting with Coach O'Keefe, Joe received a call from Hawkeye head coach Kirk Ferentz. According to Mr. Stanzi, discussions of NFL rumors were never mentioned, but he felt very comfortable that Coach Ferentz would remain at Iowa.

"Everything with Coach Ferentz to this point has been ‘what you see is what you get.' He basically just wanted to reiterate that they had a very strong interest in Rick, and it was a lot of general talk like how each of our holidays went."

Miami(OH) head coach Shane Montgomery also spoke with the elder Stanzi.

"Coach Montgomery and his staff at Miami(OH) have done a great job in recruiting Rick. They know they are not a Big Ten school, but they feel they have a lot to offer. It takes something special for a school like theirs to recruit against Big Ten schools, and in MAC standards, they are putting together a very good recruiting class right now. Really, it'll just come down to Rick's comfort level with them," Stanzi stated.

As far as a decision goes, according to Mr. Stanzi, one could occur at anytime, but best likelihood is for them to announce their decision within a week after their Purdue official visit.
