When Coach Ferentz arrived on campus, he did not blow Hawk fans away with hiring big name assistant coaches. However, it has not been hard to see the past three recruiting seasons just exactly how many times a prospect has stated that Iowa had the best recruiting approach and coaching staff during the process. Those statements echo the thoughts of DT Trevor Laws.
"The number one reason I have Iowa so high on my list is due to my relationship with the coaching staff," Trevor said. "They have handled the recruiting process better than any other school to this point. It is nice to see some of the prestige in schools like Michigan and Notre Dame, but schools like Iowa have their advantages in the fact I can make an impact and getting earlier playing time there. Iowa is on its way back to being on that level."
Currently, Trevor has offers from Iowa, Purdue, Minnesota, Michigan, and Notre Dame. Stanford, USC, Alabama, and Miami(FL) are some of the schools that have started to show very strong interest. It should not be long before Trevor's offer sheet continues to grow and he is ranked among the nation's best at the defensive tackle position.
Trevor, though, has his priorities set in making his decision. What comes most important in life will be the biggest influence in helping make his decision easier.
"Academics will by far be the biggest factor. I want to have a great relationship with the coaches and a sense of comradery among the team. I want to make sure that my personality fits in well with the team. I also will look at the football tradition and where the program is heading."
So what other advantage may Iowa have in Trevor's recruitment?
"I want to major in pre-med. Iowa has an excellent school of medicine."
With a 3.9 GPA and 27 scored on the ACT, it seems Trevor would fit in just fine among the students currently in school for pre-med.
This is not the first time that the topic of wrestling has been brought up in a lineman's recruitment and involvement with Iowa. This time around with Trevor, though, it seems it has helped increase the interest in Iowa a lot further.
"Iowa has talked to make about possibly wrestling there, but I want to focus on football. The coaches at Iowa told me how they love lineman who wrestle because there is such a strong correlation among the two sports. It helps give good balance and builds good hands so I can get around the outside more easily."
Trevor is a two time All-American in Greco-Roman, and went 48-0 this past year winning the heavyweight state championship.
There is a full list of accomplishments for DT Trevor Laws, but not one may be bigger than when he signs his LOI to play divison one football. Whatever school is lucky enough to gain Trevor as a student-athlete and person at the university will be gaining an outstanding individual and a leader in many areas for several years.
