A first team all-district performer last year, Blessington has already caught the eye of the Hawkeye coaching staff.
"I was invited to go down to their basketball game against Wisconsin," Blessington said. "I spoke with their recruiting coordinator (Eric Johnson) and he basically wanted to know what I was up in the spring, and asked that I come to their elite camp and regular camp. He said they want to see me perform against bigger lineman."
Southern Cal is a relatively small 2A program in the state of Iowa, but Iowa has a history or striking it rich in the past with small town athletes.
Blessington is just that; an athlete, and one who has been timed at 53.0 in the 400 meter dash at 225-pounds. He also throws discus and runs on the 4x200 and sprint medley relay teams.
Last summer, entering his junior year, Blessington attended Iowa's summer football camp.
"I really enjoyed working with their defensive coaches, and I really like Iowa's defense. They liked how aggressive I played, and a lot of that is because I model my game after Matt Roth. I always enjoyed watching him, and how much intensity he brought," Blessington stated.
"They really helped me perform better with my junior season with the information I learned. Here, I was just told to read the quarterback, but they taught me how to read lineman by their stance and react if it is a pass or run play. It was a tremendous help."
Blessington will be on hand for a Hawkeye spring practice on April 5th. He also plans to attend Iowa State's spring game on April 15th.
Wisconsin, Kansas State, Colorado, Illinois, and Minnesota are other programs to have inquired about Blessington.
