Polk County I-Club Golf Outing Review

The Polk County I Club golf outing was a great success. The Wakonda Club hosted the event, comprised of thirty-three foursomes with an added Hawkeye celebrity. Head Coach Kirk Ferentz was the main speaker at the dinner. Kirk looked very good considering he had just spent the previous night on the town with Barry Alvarez, Dan McCarney, and Bob Stoops. There was no better place to be in Des Moines this past Monday night!

Hawkeye golf balls were in the air on Monday as the Polk County I-Club sponsored a golf outing at the Wakonda Club. Current athletes, former athletes (TE Marv Cook pictured to the left), and Iowa staff personnel teamed with central Iowa businessmen for a great time on the course. Using a best ball format, the winning score was a net 49! The Hawkeye celebrity with this team was Associate Athletic Director Mark Jennings. Those of you that see Mark this summer may want to comment on his good fortune.

Kirk Ferentz was the featured speaker at the dinner. He commented that team members are working very hard this summer in their workouts with Coach Doyle. They should be healthy when two-a-days start in August.

Kirk and his family will resemble the Griswold Family Vacation movie fame next week by piling in a car and driving to his parents home in Pennsylvania. The team will also have the week off, including Bruce Nelson pictured to the right.

Many prizes were awarded, ranging from an $800 certificate at the Wakonda Club Pro Shop to golf balls and equipment. The silent auction was also a big success with items such as trips, dinners, hotel rooms and golf equipment among the prizes.

However, the best part of the event was that it raised approximately $25,000 to help endow a football scholarship at the University of Iowa. What a day! Golfing with a Hawkeye, a few cocktails, the Chairman's Reserve Filet, golf prizes, a chance to talk to Kirk Ferentz and also raise money for the Hawks. As the Mastercard ad says: Priceless!

This was a very well run event. Jim Carney did most of the planning and should be commended for all his work. Those of you who did not attend this year should plan on coming to the event next year.
