"I've only played defensive end, but I'm only being recruited for defensive tackle because of my weight. I will be playing some defensive tackle in my senior season but I still have to play some defensive end to help my team win. I don't mind the change, it's just that defensive tackle will be harder because I will be double-teamed and be on the interior defense instead of being an outer guy.
"Illinois is only 40 minutes from my house, so it was easy to visit. They were the first to recruit and offer me. The coaches are very enthusiastic and have a positive outlook on everything, even though their record isn't the best. Illinois has a prestigious program and the coaches are confident they'll turn it around," he said. "My good friend, Michael Hoomanawanui, graduated last year and is now playing at Illinois as a tight end. He is the only connection I have to any of the schools that have offered me.
"I visited Iowa back in April because it's only two hours from home. The defensive line coach, Ron Aiken, and I have the same ideas about everything. Also, I've heard that Iowa has one of the best strength conditioning coaches in America--which means I'd get stronger and play better," Brent said.
"I don't plan to have a top five until the end of summer because I have to visit more schools. My mom and uncles tell me to keep open-minded despite the pressure to commit, and not favor the only schools I've seen," he said.
"I'm looking for a college where I can play both sports and feel comfortable with the coaches. This month, I plan to go to camps in Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State. After all these visits I will have a better idea of where I want to go because I'll have gotten some first impressions of the coaches. Then I can take official visits to the schools I like in fall to get to know the coaches more personally.
"My biggest asset is my quickness of the ball," he said. "I need to play a little bit lower because I have a tendency to stand up straight instead of in an athletic position. I also want to lower my 40 time."
Brent bench presses 365, squats 485 and has a 29 vertical jump.
He reports a 2.3 core GPA and a 21 ACT score which he may retake in fall.
