Hawkeye Recruiting Tidbits

Summer is drawing to an end as we near the opening of football camp. However, the vacation season is not stopping the Hawkeye coaching staff from putting together some top notch recruiting weekends. This past weekend the Hawks entertained one of the midwest's best offensive linemen, and this weekend may be no different as the prize recruits keep rolling into Iowa City.

Despite reports on the internet, Derrek Blackwell informed HTO.com that Iowa State has not offered him a scholarship nor shown him much interest. Derrek currently has offers from Iowa, Northern Illinois, and Northern Iowa. He is receiving strong interest from Michigan, Purdue, Nebraska, and Kansas State.

"Iowa is still recruiting me the hardest by far. They send three or four letters a day," Derek stated. "They told me they view me as a mixture of Ladell Betts and Jeremy Allen at their camp because of my combination of size and speed. I will be a featured big back for them."

The Hawkeyes hosted OL Marcus Coleman last weekend. Marcus currently has four BigTen offers, including Iowa, and is seriously considering Notre Dame. HTO.com caught up with Marcus's mother, Joan Coleman.

"The visit to Iowa City was the first for Marcus," Mrs. Coleman added. "The visit was great as the coaches treated us well and had it all planned out. We had meetings with Coach Ferentz, Coach Philbin and Coach Dobson. Marcus had the chance to speak to a few current players. The visit was very impressive as we got to tour the campus."

Add Marcus to the wish list of offensive lineman for the Hawks. Iowa should be invovled through the thick and thin of Marcus's recruitment this fall.

The Hawks are sitting very well with their chances of landing an official visit from OL Ryan Harris, who ranks among the elite in the midwest. Ryan currently is looking very strongly at Miami(FL), Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Purdue among others.

The Iowa State weekend appears to be very big not only for in-state pride, but also because the fact it is a night game is opening up a lot more visits. WR Byron Williams is scheduled to officially visit, and expect that list to grow. Also, many of the midwest's premier prospects should be in attendance. Is there a better game for them to attend? Hawk fans will be ready and rowdy. You can be certain of that!

The Hawkeyes will expect to gain a visit from another top OL in the midwest, OL Joe Thomas. Notre Dame and Wisconsin currently sit at top of Joe's list, but Joe has yet to visit Iowa City. Expect Joe to give Iowa and Michigan a further look. Joe is a big-time track athlete and will look heavily into each school's track program. Could Iowa's success with the mixture of football and track help move up Joe's list?

The Hawkeyes will be holding a special outdoor cook-out this Saturday for prospects. In fact, there is hope of a big turn-out as the Hawks hope to end their summer with a good bang to get momentum for a stretch of official visits.

HTO.com also spoke with Eddy Zbikowski, the proud father of prospect ATH Tommy Zbikowski. Eddy told HTO.com that OL Mike Jones and Tommy had been speaking on the phone about making a trip together to Iowa City this weekend and also visiting Wisconsin together. Eddy also stated that watching Mike and his older brother, Ravens OL Jim Jones, battle each other in the backyard is what can help decide the neighbors to move out!

Eddy gave very good remarks on Iowa's camp, especially the lineman that were in attendance. One of the lineman he was given the chance to meet was OL Gosder Cherilus. The Hawks love Gosder's potential, although he is a bit more undeveloped than some of the other OL because he has played less football. Gosder is quickly moving up the Hawkeye wish list.
