Media Day: Miguel Merrick

Senior Safety Miguel Merrick feels confident going into his final season at Iowa. He spoke with HN.com about his reltionship with fellow safety, Marcus Paschal, how they communicate on the field, what the new starting CBs look like, and more in this Premium Q&A.

I think people are wondering how good this defense is going to be with the loss of Chad and Abdul. What do you think?

I mean, we have guys working and pushing each other and competing. Yeah, we lost two guys to the NFL, but, I mean, we have backups who are going to fill in and who are able to do the job and will do the job. So, we have no problem with that. The D-line, they're a year older. I mean those guys, you see them now, they're making my job a lot easier. I thank them every day. We have some good corners. Those guys are working every day and getting better. Me and Marcus are back there trying to provide leadership and experience. We're just getting better every day as a defense.

How is the relationship between you and Marcus now? You've had a whole year of starting together.

It's so, so much different than last year. This year, he doesn't even have to say something and I know what he's going to do and vice versa. Our communication is a lot better. When you're in big stadiums and you're not able to hear each other, that's definitely going to help us out. We can just look at each other and know what we're going to do.

Do you feel extra responsibilities with the new corners?

It's sort of like four years ago and look how those guys turned out. Adam tied for the team lead in interceptions last year. Charles, he's been going back and forth and he's the fastest guy on the team. Those guys are going to come in and do a great job.

Are they looking to you and Marcus for some guidance?

Yeah, definitely, just to know the ups and downs of the season and just what to look at in certain situations. They ask us questions, but those guys pretty much know what's going on.

Coach Ferentz said they might bring more athleticism to the position. Do you see that?

You can definitely see that. Obviously, they're physically taller and physically bigger. They are faster. But one thing you loose with Antwan and Jovon is experience, and that's something that you can't teach. Once those guys get experience, the sky is the limit for them.
