Syracuse Week: Bryan Mattison

Bryan Mattison spoke with the media on Tuesday following Kirk Ferentz's press conference. Read what he had to say on playing in a dome, improving from next week, the return of Kenny Iwebema, and more in this premium transcript.

Q: (A question on playing in a dome without A/C)

Bryan Mattison: It's just another game. It's going to be warm, but what are you going to do? We've got to go play.

Q: Have you ever played in a dome?

Mattison: Not here. I played in the RCA Dome in High School.

Q: Having walked in a dome before, is it at all different?

Mattison: I guess it's different, just because it's all outside. Once you start playing, you don't really think of that stuff. You just want to concentrate on the guy across from you and your game plan and stuff.

Q: Talk about the boost of having Kenny back on the DL this week.

Mattison: It's going to be nice. It adds another great defensive lineman to the rotation. It's nice to have him back. Hopefully we'll do alright.

Q: He said when he was in the student section, especially when you guys would make some big plays, he'd catch some flack from the students. What about you guys after the game?

Mattison: Nah. We joke with him a little bit and stuff, but the student section is great. I'm sure they were giving him a hard time, but that's why they're a good student section.

Q: What kind of challenge does the first road game of the year bring about?

Mattison: Some of the young guys haven't been on the road before. They'll travel for the first time on a plane, some of the guys have never flown before. Just that kind of stuff. That's what older guys are for, to try and teach them the way. The older guys have done it before, and it shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Q: Is it hard to not overlook an opponent like Syracuse, considering what happened last year?

Mattison: Last year is last year. They can look at us and say we were 7-5. That's not where we wanted to be, and I'm sure they didn't want to be where they were. It's just another game on our schedule. We've got to prepare for them just like any other team.

Q: You guys have had some trouble in road openers the last two seasons, the ASU game, the Iowa State game. What's the mentality now going into a road opener this year to try and change that?

Mattison: I don't know, we're just going to go out and work hard this week, just like we do every week. Prepare the same, there's not a lot changing. Hopefully, a win.

Q: It's tough to top what you guys did last week as a defensive line, especially getting Kenny back this week. Probably only be looking on the up-and-up.

Mattison: You'd like to think that things can only get better, but it's not a guaranteed thing. We're going to have to go out there and execute the game plan well, which comes from a good week of practice. That all starts today.
