Purdue Week: Mike Klinkenborg Transcript

Mike Klinkenborg spoke with the media on Tuesday at Iowa's weekly press conference. Read what he had to say about matching up with Anthony Gonzalez, playing against the spread, preparing for Purdue, and more in this premium transcript.

Q: Are you guys locked into the linebacker covering a WR thing because of the personnel? Because Marcus is hurt, Devan's hurt? Or is it just Norm's always going to be that way?

Mike Klinkenborg: That's how he's always been. That's how we're going to do it this week, I'm sure, too. We start the gameplan today, but we believe we can cover WRs, just jam them up.

Q: What is the key to a LB covering a WR, just getting in their face, keeping them on the line of scrimmage?

Klinkenborg: Don't backpedal at all, just kind of shuffle your feet, can't allow them to get inside.

Q: What's it like for you, it was an eye opener, matched up with Gonzalez, right back into the fire with Purdue. What'd you learn last week, what will you work on?

Klinkenborg: Just don't let them get inside my like last time. Just try to stay lower, not backpedal, that's the one thing.

Q: Purdue has a pretty explosive offense, what do you expect for this week's game?

Klinkenborg: I think they're similar to a lot of teams we've played so far. Iowa State, Illinois, those teams kind of compare. The same things you see, they fake the gut, go option with the QB. A lot of the same kinds of passing schemes.

Q: Why don't you expand on that a little bit about how you're going to play defense versus what you played this year so far?

Klinkenborg: Things aren't going to change much, I don't think. Coach Parker, we'll find out today, but I don't expect things to change much at all.
