James Vandenberg, a 6-2, 180 pound quarterback out of Keokuk (Iowa) HS, may be coming across his first offer very soon, but in the meantime, he's taking junior day visits, including Iowa this past weekend.

"It was really nice," Vandenberg said. "I've been up there to bunch of Iowa games since we moved to Iowa. It was great being up there and seeing the facilities. The basketball game was amazing."

Vandenberg, along with several other recruits, sat courtside and watched Iowa defeat Illinois on senior day. It wasn't the first time Vandenberg had been at an important Iowa athletic event.

"When I was really little, I went up to the Michigan/Iowa game and I got introduced at halftime at the 50 yard line," he said. "I'd won the state championship in the Drive, Chip, and Putt. It was a golf thing. I got introduced at the Michigan game. Michigan was really good that year, so it was pretty cool."

His junior year, Vandenberg completed 64% of his passes en route to 2,655 yards and 29 passing TDs to go along with 4 rushing TDs. That's garnering Vandenberg plenty of interest from some top schools in the Midwest and beyond.

"Right now I'm hearing the most from Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska, Northwestern, and Purdue," he said. "I've been talking to New Mexico, and an offer might be coming through in the next week or so.

"They saw my highlight tape, and I was sending film to them this week. They're supposed to get back to me as soon as they look at the film."

Just as important as football will be the academics of a school, with Vandenberg hoping to start the ball rolling on a med-school career.

"Academics is very important to me," he said. "I'm a pretty good student in the classroom. I still have a 4.0, so that's a really big thing. Coaches and the campus are also a big thing. So far, every coaching staff I've met has been phenomenal."

Vandenberg took a football team projected to finished 6 out of 7 in their conference to a district title, losing 21-14 to a final four team. As he gears up for his senior season, he's already got a few more spring visits planned out.

"I'm going to an Iowa State junior day on March 24th, going to a spring practice of Iowa's sometime during the month of March," Vandenberg said. "Nebraska invited me to their spring game on April 16th, I think. Northwestern wants me to make a visit sometime in the month of April, to their spring game."

We'll check in with Vandenberg throughout the spring to see how his recruitment is going.
