"I was not getting much recruiting attention until the Super Showcase held in Saint Louis. We were playing against Amare Stoudamire and his AAU team, and I caught fire scoring 27 points with four three pointers. A lot of recruiters started to direct their attention towards me and began speaking to my coach. Amare only had like 12 points."
After hearing that, I figured there had to be reason for Lance to quickly point out Amare's bad game. So I asked, "So did you get any great plays on Amare, like maybe a dunk?"
"I tried, but he just took the ball right out of my hands," Lance stated with laughter. "I was just amazed at how big and strong he is, and now he is playing in the NBA."
Because of late recruiting interest, Lance did not even pursue the idea of taking any official visits this past winter. However, after that performance and another stellar one at Nike Camp, he has found himself sitting with a wide list of schools.
"I have offers from Iowa, Saint Louis, Creighton, Marquette, and Kansas State. Iowa State and Oklahoma both have requested a visit and said they may offer on the trip. I will be visiting Iowa on October 11th and I have a visit set to Kansas State for the following weekend on the 18th."
So what are Lance's initial thoughts on his upcoming visit and the Hawkeye program, overall?
"I'm looking forward to the visit as I know it will be their Midnight Madness. Coach Alford, Coach Lansing, and Coach Walker have all visited my school and introduced themselves. Coach Lansing is my main recruiter, and he is a nice guy. Iowa has told me I'll have the chance to starting playing right away and that Coach Alford is one of the best to have help me develop my shot."
What steps has Lance been taking during this off-season and with the start of school to help further develop his game?
"One of Missouri's former great shooters, Jason Sutherland, has been working with me after school in developing my shot. We have been working on my pivots steps and all sorts of drills that he did while in college. Working on my game is probably what I'm doing most of the day." Since Nike Camp, Hawkeye fans have known that 6'4 185 Columbia, MO G Lance Harris has been one of the biggest targets on Coach Alford's radar. Lance has lined up an official visit to Iowa City, and will also be taking that course of action with a few other schools. Get Lance's thoughts on the Hawkeyes and more in this feature report.
Lance certainly is fitting the description of a "gym rat", which has been a very popular theme for all players recruited by Coach Alford. Finally, what will Lance look for in taking his game to the next level with his serious approach for the game?
"Playing time will probably be the biggest factor as I want the chance to get out there and start competing. I want to have good academic support where I go so that I can make sure I'm doing well in school. I know that Iowa has that library coming for athletes, and a lot of other schools have special programs, too. I also want to play for the same coach during my tenure at school."
Midnight Madness is going to be a great night for the Hawks, literally, with Lance Harris and Nick DeWitz in attendance. It will be a night where Hawk fans will have to show their maximum support to the team as this group gets ready for a hard fought season. Make sure to wear your bright gold!
