Will Compton, a 6-1, 217 pound LB/S out of North County HS in Bonne Terre, Missouri just received an offer from the Iowa Hawkeyes. Compton had been back and forth with the Iowa staff about whether an offer was coming soon.
"Coach Eric Johnson called me the other day, using his one phone call, and he said that I'll have an offer at camp, after the LB coach gives me an eyeball test," Compton said. "We text a lot, but we kept messaging from then on and I was wondering about whether it was an official offer. He says, ‘Up here, you'll have one.'"
That changed today.
"Today, he texted me and told me I have an official offer from Iowa and it should be coming in the mail any time," he said.
Iowa is a school that Compton's been familiar with, but mostly for the wrestling program.
"I've watched them the past few years," he said. "I hear about Iowa mostly because of my family. Besides football, we're into wrestling. My brother is very good. I know of Iowa's wrestling program, I've heard about it since I was little."
Compton's brother, Cody, is a highly-ranked wrester at 140 pounds in Class 3, lost in the semifinals of the Class 3 state tournament at 140 pounds.
Recently, Compton attended the Scout.com combine in Kansas City, and has earned two new offers since then, one from Iowa as well as a new offer from Kansas. At the combine, he ran a 4.50 40-yard dash and a position-best 7.07 3-cone drill.
"I got offered right after that by Kansas, but I performed real well at the Nike Camp as well," he said. "Things were starting up for me anyway, but I think getting an official time for me really helped."
Compton denied any true leaders, but said if he had to pick, Iowa, Illinois, Wake Forest, and Missouri. Compton will be quite busy in the coming month, with camp and/or visits planned at Northwestern, Notre Dame, Missouri, Wake Forest, Iowa, Kansas State, and Illinois. Will hopes to get a decision out of the way before his senior year begins, but he said he wants to be "150% sure" before making a commitment.
