Steeples Slowed By Hip Injury

Robert Steeples, a 6-1, 185 pound, 4.53 CB out of DeSmet Jesuit HS in St. Louis, Missouri impressed all in attendance at the Chicago Scout.com Combine last month, but an early summer hip injury has slowed down his momentum, pushing possible offers back even further. Read more in this premium recruiting update.

In the past week, Robert Steeples has seen two of his good friends make their college choices, with Wes Kemp heading to Wisconsin and Jason Ford heading to Iowa. Is there a leader at the moment for the impressive DB recruit out of DeSmet Jesuit HS in St. Louis, Missouri?

"I really don't have any top schools right now," Steeples said. "I only have 4 offers, but I'm really liking Ole Miss, Missouri, and Northwestern. As far as who hasn't offered, I like Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan and Stanford's looking nice now too."

Steeples strained his hip/groin at the Ole Miss camp in early June, which has put a damper on his plans for other camps this summer. For at least one school, this means an offer may have to wait.

"Iowa said they were going to wait until they get a chance to see me on film," he said. "I guess that's what schools are waiting for right now."

Steeples, who was able to camp at Wake Forest and Ole Miss before his injury, said he hopes to make a decision in September, based on whoever has offered him at that point. When we spoke with Robert, he was gearing up for a Thursday trip to Missouri to visit campus, and trying to plan a visit to Northwestern, his most recent offer.

The lack of offers for Steeples is a bit puzzling at this point, especially to those who have seen him in person, but the defensive back-MVP of the Scout.com Chicago Combine is taking it all in stride, especially compared to his high-profile friends.

"(Ford and Kemp) started the recruiting process a lot earlier than most, their names were out there as sophomores," Steeples said. "They've been big-time players for a long time. My recruiting's just teeing off now, but they started as sophomores, they had more time to be evaluated."

Steeples, who reports a 4.08 GPA and a 22 ACT, has one main factor in mind when evaluating schools.

"Most importantly, I ask about the academics," he said. "I also do research myself on the internet to check that out. I just want to see where I stand on their list. Most places are honest with me when I ask, ‘Where do I rank with you guys, how interested are you in me?' That's just the main thing, seeing if they're interested."
