Hawks In with Illinois QB

Iowa is sitting well with one of the rising quarterbacks in the Midwest, Illinois prep John Wienke. Chris Pool files this report, which updates you on Wienke's recruitment, his favorites, plus more...

"I never expected all of this," said John Wienke.

"I was just hoping to get an offer from a 1-AA school but a lot of great things have happened this spring and summer. I received a scholarship offer after every camp I attended."

Wienke threw for 3,221 yards and 34 touchdowns as a junior. He was an all-state selection. Wienke is coached by his father, Stan Wienke, who was a pretty good athlete in his own right.

"My dad had scholarship offers from Wisconsin, Illinois and a few other schools when he was in high school." Wienke said.

"My dad was a great athlete. He played like six different sports. I'm lucky to be able to have my dad because he's been through all of this."

Wienke recently attended Purdue's elite quarterback camp and came away with a scholarship offer.

"Coach Tiller told me that they don't do any offers in person." Wienke said. "He also told me that he wanted me to come play football for him at Purdue and I should be receiving a letter in the mail soon."

Did the Boilermakers make Wienke's list of favorites?

"Right now my favorites are Michigan, Purdue, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Northern Illinois." Wienke said. "Michigan and Iowa are my co-leaders," he added.

"I felt very comfortable with Iowa and Michigan when I visited the schools. Illinois is also up there. Illinois is 20 miles down the road and I know the coaching staff very well. All seven of my favorites have offered."

When will John Wienke be making his college decision?

"I know the last time I spoke with you, I said that I wouldn't make a commitment until after my senior season but that has changed." Wienke said.

"I wanted to be able to get some exposure for some of my teammates but I've become educated on the recruiting process and I know that if I wait to long, scholarships could be gone at the schools of my choice.

"I'm going out to California for vacation in July and I'm hoping to make my decision in mid-July. I'm looking at a lot of factors. Most importantly being my feel for the school, the offense they run and depth chart."

Right now it look like the Boilers are on the outside looking in with Michigan and Iowa leading the way for Wienke's services. Can Coach Tiller make up some ground on the Hawkeyes and Wolverines? He has until mid-July to make Wienke's decision tougher than expected.
