Hawks Overtime Tally Makes An Unhappy Valley

The Hawks blew a 22-point lead in the last 7 1/2 minutes of the nationally televised game against Penn State. What appeared to be a laugher in the first half became a nail biter in the second half as the Hawks once again almost grabbed defeat from the clutches of victory. CJ Jones snared his second touchdown pass during the overtime period and Iowa held on to win their 3rd straight game against the legendary Joe Paterno and his Nittany Lion charges.

The Hawks bolted out to a 23-0 first half lead before Penn State could muster a score. Iowa rode Fred Russell's quick feet and Brad Banks strong arm to take an early commanding lead. The tide started to turn when myopic officials committed a horrible homer call on a Penn State fumble complete with an Iowa pickup and touchdown run. Replays showed that the men in stripes had made a grievous error. What should have been an Iowa 30-0 lead was whittled down as the Iowa defense finally remitted for a Nittany Lion score. Nate Kaeding added an Iowa record 55-yard field goal for an Iowa halftime lead of 26-7!

Penn State was rejuvenated by their sudden stroke of luck and came out energized after halftime. However, not until after the Hawks had continued scoring to build a 35-13 lead midway through the fourth quarter. Then lightning struck for the Nittany Lions similar to the late touchdown rallies inspired by Touchdown Jesus at Notre Dame.

During the overtime period, the quickness of CJ Jones prevailed and enabled him to score on a simple look in pass from Brad Banks. The Hawk defense then held on for the win against the 12th ranked Nittany Lions.

Now it's Purdue's passing attack coming to Iowa City to challenge the Norm Parker defense. Kickoff is at 11 a.m. next Saturday.
