Iowa, coming off a tough loss at home to Indiana at Kinnick, rolled into State College looking to bounce back. Iowa took the opening kick down into Penn State territory, with Austin Signor hitting a 45 yard field goal to put the Hawkeyes up 3-0. Two drives later, Penn State had first and goal at the 5, before the Hawkeyes picked off a pass to end the threat.

Penn State put together two scoring TD drives, late in the first and in the middle of the second quarters to put Iowa behind the 8 ball with an 11 point lead going into the half.

They added to their lead in the first half on a Kevin Kelly field goal, putting the Lions up 17-3. The Hawkeye offense awoke from its slumber in the third quarter, with a 19 yard touchdown strike to Derrell Johnson-Koulianos. After another three-and-out, the Hawkeyes hit quickly with a 53-yard pass down the sideline to Derrell Johnson-Koulianos, giving him his second score of the day.

With 2:00 left in the game, Kevin Kelly hit a 49 yard field goal to put the Lions up 20-17. The Hawkeyes couldn't quite pull out the win, however, falling 20-17 after failing to convert a fourth down near midfield.
