Russell Ellington joins class of 2008

Russell Ellington, a 6-3, 215 pound SS/LB has picked the Hawkeyes as his college destination. Read what the three-star prospect out of Homewood-Flossmoor had to say on Friday about Iowa City, the Iowa staff and his teammate, Supo Sanni in this premium recruiting Q&A.

Q: The last few weeks, it's seemed like Illinois, Iowa State, and Wake Forest. How'd you settle on Iowa?

Russell Ellington: The last couple weeks Iowa's been contacting me a lot. I sat down with my parents and talked about it a lot. We agreed on Iowa.

Q: What stood out for you about Iowa?

Ellington: I've been down there 3 or 4 times, so I know what it's like. My mother felt the most comfortable, of all the schools she's been to, with Iowa City. It was an easy decision.

Q: What was it, about the town, that you liked?

Ellington: The people in town were very nice. It seems like a nice group of fans. They get really excited about their Hawkeyes, that's something I want to be a part of.

Q: Where does Iowa have you playing?

Ellington: As of right now, strong safety. Depending on my weight after training and things, possibly outside linebacker.

Q: What are you stats like, so far this season?

Ellington: 10 offensive touchdowns, not sure how many tackles, but I have 3 interceptions.

Q: What makes you stand out on the field?

Ellington: Defensively, it's mostly my speed. Guys can't really get around the edge or throw deep on us.

Q: Was the Iowa staff a little surprised to hear the news?

Ellington: Not necessarily surprised, they're happy. I've been talking to Coach Erb, and he knew it could possibly be coming.

Q: Have you been trying to pull Supo Sanni into the Hawkeye fold as well?

Ellington: Oh yeah, I was talking to him this morning. He's going to make a visit to West Virginia, then he'll sit down and make his decision.

Q: You had committed to Iowa State earlier this year, are you telling coaches to stop recruiting you at this point?

Ellington: Yeah, I'm done.
