Staggs' Decision Coming Soon

Steven Staggs, a WR prospect from Oskaloosa High School, took an official visit to Iowa City this weekend. Read how the visit went and his plans for his final decision in this premium recruiting update

After cancelling a planned Air Force visit, Steven Staggs took his last official visit to Iowa this weekend. After spending time meeting with the coaching staff and academic staff, Staggs took in the Iowa/Michigan basketball game, courtside with former teammate and current Hawkeye Tyler Sash.

Staggs, who had been on campus many times before, said this was the first time he'd gotten extended one-on-one time with most of the coaching staff, and he really enjoyed it.

Currently, Staggs holds offers from Northern Iowa, Army, and South Dakota, as well as a preferred walk-on offer from Iowa, Purdue, and Kansas State. A preferred walk-on means that Staggs would be invited in to camp in Early August, part of the 105-man roster each school is limited to. From there, he would have the opportunity to earn a scholarship, jsut like any other walk-on prospect.

Staggs said he hopes to sit down with his family this week and make a decision soon, possibly before next weekend.

My Thoughts: Staggs is in an unfortunate situation this year. Despite his tremendous physical gifts (running a 4.43 at the Scout.com combine) and playmaking ability (42 catches for 730 yards, 8 TDs on a team that wasn't focused on the pass) Iowa just isn't in need of many WRs this year. Iowa has taken only on receiver this year, in Shane Prater, with the possibility of moving to DB later on. Iowa also has 8 returning receivers, with only one slated to be a senior. If Staggs ends up a Hawkeye, I believe he'll find a way to make an impact, despite the depth at receiver this year. I'm going to weigh all my optoins this week. Hopefully make a decision later this week.
