Eric McCollom may not literally stand tall in the pocket, at only 6'0 170, but you would be hard pressed to find anyone in the Camden, SC area that does not believe he stands large in the pocket. HTO.com caught up with Camden High Head Coach Jim Neal to get the full report on Eric, and it was not hard to come away impressed with the Hawkeyes newly found quarterback prospect.
"Eric has great arm strength for his size," Coach Neal said very proudly of his star quarterback. "He has a quick release to go along with great feet. He is a very similar quarterback to Brad Banks, and we run a similar offense to that of Iowa's."
"Many schools have not offered Eric due to his height, which is fine, but they are making a mistake. There is no question in my mind how good of a quarterback Eric is, and I have no problem stating he is a great football player."
A prospect in South Carolina, you would figure most attention would be brought from the SEC and ACC Conferences. It just so happens that Eric's current two offers come from the Big Ten Conference.
So exactly how did Iowa manage to dip into the Gamecock state for Eric McCollom?
"Coach (Ron) Aiken, who recruits this area for Iowa, has a fella whom he coached that coaches 30 miles away from here," Coach Neal added. "He recommended Eric to Coach Aiken, and Coach Aiken requested tape shortly after. In fact, Coach Aiken was at our practice on Monday."
While the Hawkeyes' attention is set right now on QB Eric McCollom, there is also another youngester whom Hawk fans may need to keep their eyes on in the future.
"We have a junior defensive end, Jarrett Wiggins, who will probably gain some division one interest. Coach Aiken remarked that he liked what he saw in practice. Jarrett is only 6'4 205, but very explosive off the line, and he will continue to get bigger."
Eric may not be large in size, but he has left a big impression in Camden High's record books, including breaking the school record for the second straight season in passing for 2,968 yards this season. He was successful in 131 of 205 pass attempts, including 34 touchdowns and only six interceptions.
"Eric was invited in the South Carolina shrine bowl this year, which is a great honor. It matches the top forty players from South Carolina against the top forty from North Carolina."
HTO.com will keep you informed with any developments in the recruitment of QB Eric McCollom, including when an official visit date is set. Right now, it appears the Hawks have run into some good late fortune in finding Camden, SC's finest.
