ISU Week: Matt Kroul Q&A

The Iowa Hawkeyes will square off against their hated instate rival Iowa State this weekend. As you might imagine, the big game was the big talk at this week's press conference day. Matt Kroul, who grew up in Mt. Vernon, knows a thing or two about this rivalry.

Q: Last year, through three and a half games you guys didn't give up a touchdown and this year, you have yet to do that. Talk about good starts to a season.

Matt Kroul: I think it's easier than on offense. We are playing our gaps, and if you do that a defense will do well. This is the next step. We have the basics down and we will see what we can do.

Q: Iowa State has two mobile quarterbacks. Do you work more on contain this week?

Kroul: We have played against a lot of those guys; college football is going that way. We have contained a couple guys so far, the last two weeks we have seen runners. You stay in your lanes and don't let them get outside.

Q: Did you get what you needed out of Maine and FIU to go to new level?

Kroul: You hope so. I think as a defense, we improved from the first week to the second week and our goal is to improve each week. A lot of guys had experience, and that is good. Another game in Kinnick, which is nice. I think we took the right steps.

Q: Is it tough to get ready for a two headed monster at QB with Arnaud and Bates? Are there some differences?

Kroul: You try to do the same thing each week. They are both runners, they both have strong arms and can make plays. It will be a challenge for us and I am looking forward to it.

Q: You were sitting on the bench after ISU's winning field goal last year. Do you still think about that?

Kroul: It runs through your mind in the summer when you are running. That is what you work for. Iowa State is in my mind more. We want to get this win, and get one for our fans.
