Kirk on the Side: Bowl Q&A

Iowa Head Coach Kirk Ferentz met with reporters 'On the Side' after his main bowl press conference and was asked more questions about South Carolina, Steve Spurrier, when he first heard about Iowa's invitation to the Outback Bowl and more...

Q: Do you know what officiating crew will be there?

Kirk Ferentz: I forgot all about that. (Laughs). I think they have addressed that since that year, as a result of our game. I will not worry about that. That was a big topic two years ago. You get over it because there is nothing you can do about it. I didn't get a letter of apology.

Q: Spurrier fired his offensive line coach before the bowl.

Ferentz: I am not a candidate if that is what you are asking. I wasn't aware of that.

Q: Could you imagine doing that and going into a bowl game like that?

Ferentz: It happens, that is the climate we are in right now. Coaches get fired all of the time, head coaches and assistant coaches. It's unusual I guess, but I am sure he had a good reason.

Q: Are people after your coaches?

Ferentz: Not that I am really aware of. There have been some people inquiring, but you hear a lot of things out there in general. You realize based on some of the jobs filled so far, they are hard to come by. We have had some guys that are on radar screens.

Q: When is it appropriate that you and Shonn have the NFL talk?

Ferentz: After the game. I don't think people in the NFL know what the board looks like. Sometime in January that will be more apparent what it looks like.

Q: Do you think after this year, with NFL player contract changes, will that affect his decision?

Ferentz: I am not an expert in the field, but I think the terms that are floating out there are exaggerated. It's not going to be easy; there is a lot of give and take. I think that has a ways to go before it's determined. I am not sure that will be a huge factor, but I am not saying it will be.

Q: Coach Spurrier has said he will change quarterbacks going into the bowl game.

Ferentz: I didn't know who, Garcia at one point. He is back in? I know he is from Tampa, right? I don't know much about their team. They will do what it takes to give themselves the best chance to win.

Q: The Capital One bowl was staying in contact with you.

Ferentz: It's like recruiting. Everyone has a line in the water; every bowl keeps a line in the water with every potential school. At the end of the day, at least in this case, things were still up in the air right up until the 11th hour here. That is fine. We were confident we were going to a nice bowl.

Q: When did you get the call?

Ferentz: I just found out at the end of practice. In fact I was waiting to hear and thought someone would tell me. As we started wrapping up, I wandered over to the person holding the phone and they hadn't heard anything. It did go down late. But I found out right before I talked with the team.

Q: Will you seek any information on Coach Spurrier from Ladell and Bowen?

Ferentz: I hadn't thought about that. That is a good idea. You guys are way ahead of me. We will do what we can. The most important thing is to look at film, particularly the second part of the season. I would guess people would do that to us. You still have to sift through what works for you and what doesn't. It's a process. We will be O.K. I am more worried about us.
