Pregont Choses Iowa over Wisconsin

Jo Jo Pregont is a self admitted fan of the Wisconsin Badgers in addition to being a Janesville, WI native. So when the Badgers and the Iowa Hawkeyes offered him preferred walk on positions, many felt he would remain true to his roots. Not so fast; Pregont has decided to walk on to the University of Iowa.

When you have to choose between your heart and your head, a decision can be rather difficult. Choosing the in-state school, one that you have rooted for during your 18 years of life, or the out of state school, who is a rival of the in-state school.

"I am a Wisconsin Badger fan." Says Jo Jo Pregont of Janesville, WI. "I considered Wisconsin because I grew up a fan."

The Badger football program asked the 6'6", 215 WR prospect to be a preferred walk-on. He received the same offer from the University of Iowa. Jo Jo recently decided that Iowa was the place for him.

"I really liked Iowa City." Pregont stated. "I like the (Wisconsin) Badgers, but I really felt more at home in Iowa. That's what it came down to."

Pregont had scholarship offers from Illinois State and Minnesota-Duluth. His statistics might make people wonder why he went "below the radar" a little bit. He hauled in 62 receptions for 927 yards and 11 touchdowns. For his career, Jo Jo amassed 2,796 yards and 28 TD with his 178 catches.

Jo Jo earned Associated Press second-team all-state, WFCA honorable-mention all-state, WFCA all-region, Wisconsin State Journal first-team all area, Capital Times first-team all-area and first-team all-conference, and Big Eight Conference Receiver of the Year recognition.

He also competes in basketball and track. On the track, he is a participant in the high jump, long jump, triple jump, and 4 x 100 relay. He reports personal bests of 6'6" in the high jump, 22'+ in the long jump, and over 44' in the triple jump.

Coach Kirk Ferentz has the reputation for finding players that very few teams wanted and developing them into someone everyone wishes they had. Chad Greenway, Mitch King, Bob Sanders, and Dallas Clark to name a few. Perhaps the 6'6" Pregont will be the next in line.

"First of all, I want to get a good education (at Iowa)." Jo Jo says. "Hopefully, I will play while I am there and enjoy the life in Iowa."

So you have committed as a walk-on to the University of Iowa?

Yes.

What did that decision come down to in the end?

I liked the stuff out there. It came down to Iowa or Wisconsin. I just felt more at home in Iowa City.

Did you grow up as a Badger fan?

Yeah, I did.

Based on that, was it an interesting decision for you?

Well, that is what made me consider going to Wisconsin. Because I grew up being a Badger fan. I just liked Iowa a lot more. And it's not that far of a drive from my house.

What on the Iowa campus made you feel so much at home?

Everything. The coaching staff and players seemed cool. It's just like Wisconsin weather – I like that.

Where do the coaches see you at (position)?

I think they want to start me out at wide receiver. Once I get bigger, I will transition to tight end.

Does Iowa's ability to feature their tight end excite you?

Yeah, definitely.

What is your impression of Coach Ferentz?

I really liked him and what he is doing at Iowa. He is a good coach.

What do you hope to accomplish at Iowa?

First, I want to get an education there (business degree). Second, hopefully I will play while I am there and just enjoy the life.

Besides football, what else do you play?

Basketball and track. We have our first regional game coming up and should win that. The second game will be tough. We are two games under.500 . In track, I do the high jump, long jump, triple jump, and 4 x 100 relay. I have gone 6'6" in the high jump, 22' in the long jump, and 44' in the triple jump. I am a 4.6-4.7 in the 40.
