Doug took a trip to Iowa City in the recent months for one of their Junior Days. He came away pleased and a bit surprised.
"I was very impressed." He says. "Honestly, I never thought that the campus of Iowa would look like that. Being from Jersey you cannot really know what to expect. I was blown away by the campus and the people in Iowa."
His family made a 15 hour drive from his New Jersey home to Iowa City. So to make statements like those above helps ease the road lag. Also, his time with Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz helped.
"He is one of the most calm coaches I have ever seen." Doug said. "His office was impressive. I have never seen so many trophies and rings and pictures in my life. He was so calm and nice to my father. I was totally impressed by how he held himself."
Rigg says that distance from home will not play a factor in his decision.
Doug's high school program, Bergen Catholic, is known as a powerhouse in New Jersey. Doug hopes to be a page in the success story. The school has amassed 16 state championships. It is also the high school of 2009 NFL first round draft pick Brian Cushing.
Rigg reports running a 4.55 in the 40, which allows him to be more versatile on defense. Be it as a run stopper off the edge, or as a cover man in the slot or jamming up a screen. "I am a relentless player." Rigg states plainly. "I like to read the defense and will go out and cover the slot receiver if need be. My instincts are my strength."
