Ferguson Selects Iowa over Penn State

The Iowa Hawkeyes have snagged a pair of defensive prospects out of the state of Maryland in this class, and they happen to be high school teammates and close friends. Linebacker Jim Poggi committed to Iowa last month with a slew of impressive offers in tow. His teammate and best friend Anthony Furguson had offers from Iowa and Penn State. He visited PSU Sunday, and called Iowa to commit...

Anthony Ferguson is a defensive lineman from Maryland, and is also a high school teammate of Iowa commit Jim Poggi, a talented linebacker who chose Iowa over an impressive list of offers in mid-April.

Ferguson told Scout.com on Friday that he was going to visit Penn State this weekend and then decide on his college of choice on Sunday evening. Both of those events took place, and HN.com has learned through a source very close to Ferguson that he called Kirk Ferentz on Sunday evening to tell him he was coming to Iowa City to play football.

Ferguson said this to Scout.com last week, prior to his visit to Penn State: "I think that I have to find the best place for me. But if it is Iowa, than having Jim (Poggi) there is definitely a huge plus. It will just be another reason on top of everything else."

HN.com spoke with Poggi on Sunday night, after receiving the news of Ferguson's commitment.

"Ferg is the nicest person in the world," Poggi said. "I love him to death and I fully consider him my brother."

"But when he gets on the field he is nasty, tough, physical and fast."

"I flipped out when I found out tonight that he committed to Iowa; he will tell you that too. I couldn't be happier for him. (Playing together at Iowa) was my dream situation."
