Word4Word: Clayborn Says He's Coming Back

A complete transcript from an Adrian Clayborn interview from Monday, when the Iowa DE announced he would be back for his senior season.

IOWA CITY, Ia. Adrian Clayborn shows up to this final press conference before Iowa's bowl trip, says his peace and moves on. He doesn't look shocked he's telling you the news.

He's staying.

Speculation swirled the last few months that Clayborn might jump to the NFL after the BCS bowl with a year of college eligibility on his play clock (we have this interview on video down below).

Reporter: "Are you amused that people on-line and in the media speculate about your future and what you're going to do, good or bad, next year?"

Clayborn: "Am I amused? Not really. People can talk. I'm staying here. I don't know. I just let those people talk. Let them think what they want to think."

Reporter: "Is it easy to get wrapped up in the hype with the kind of year you had; with scouts talking about you; people talking about you; the web is just blown up in a lot of places?"

Clayborn: "Yeah, that's what I hear. But, I don't know. They have no…I don't know what to say, but they have no…they don't weigh in on my decision and what I'm doing. It's my decision and my parents' decision. We decided to stay here, so that's what we're going to do."

Reporter: "What did you learn from Shonn last year, good or bad, to see what Shonn went through last year, good or bad?"

Clayborn: "Actually him, too. I talked with him a lot throughout the process for the past month and he told me some things that really helped out with my decision."

Reporter: "How much did Kirk help out?"

Clayborn: "My talk with him was better than I thought it would be. He helped me out a lot. He showed me the positives and the cons of going with it and he helped out a lot."

Reporter: "What did you and Shonn talk about, just the differences?"

Clayborn: "Differences. Agents, how they talk to you; the different things of the process or whatever that weighed on his decision to leave early."

Reporter: "That's easy to say when you're in the BCS. Does (Greene) wish he were a part of this as opposed to what he‘s doing now?"

Clayborn: "I'm thinking he's having a great time in the NFL. (chuckles) I don't think he wanted to leave that.

Reporter: "What made you step up from last year? What was the difference this year from what you did last year?"

Clayborn: "Just a year; a year experience and a year stronger and all that. Just knowing the defense better; I know the defense a lot better than I did last year, so I'm comfortable with making plays, with, I don't know, doing certain things that I wasn't comfortable doing last year. I feel free to, free to, I don't know, do certain things."

Reporter: "Are you significantly stronger this year with the bench press and stuff?"

Clayborn: "Nah, as far as mentally, physically a little bit and condition-wise and stuff like that, just overall."

Reporter: "Adrian, if you don't mind me asking, why did you guys (he and his parents) decide to come back?"

Clayborn: "I love college. I love Iowa. I can wait a year. I don't think I've proven the things that I need to prove on the college level."

Reporter: "Have you given any thought to after January and what you guys have coming back in 2010?"

Clayborn: "Right, we have a bowl game going, but we've got a good group of guys coming back. The success that we can have next year is even better.

It's a heck of a lot better with Clayborn coming back - video:
