SAN ANTONIO - St. Louis never has been confused with Florida or Texas when it comes to cultivating prep football talent. That hasn't stopped schools from heading into the Gateway to the West for some gems.
Chaminade College Prep Quarterback Christian Suntrup is stacking up scholarship offers and might be one of the next prime prospects to come out of the city. Stanford, Nebraska and Kansas are extending rides. Others like Iowa, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, and Northwestern are showing strong interest.
"I'm more of a pro style quarterback," Suntrup said. "I'm good inside of the pocket. I have a pretty accurate arm. I have a pretty strong arm as well; also a good leader."
Suntrup speaks well of the schools that have offered him scholarships:
-"Stanford I really like. I had a great time out there. I went to their camp and they offered. I really like the coaching staff. It's awesome out in California."
-"Kansas, I haven't talked to them quite as much since the staff change, but I picked up an offer through the season.
-"Nebraska I like a lot as well. I went out to their camp. Coach Watson, Coach Pelini, they're all good guys. "
Iowa is showing a lot of interest in Suntrup, who will be visiting Iowa City for junior day on Jan. 17.
"I've been up there quite a few times," he said. "I was at a practice most recently and I'm headed up for their junior day as well.
"With Iowa, I kind of like the way they run their offense. I really like the coaching staff. Their facilities are great. When I've been up there, it's been a good time."
The Hawkeyes have discussed offering Suntrup a scholarship.
"They have talked to me about an offer," he said. "They have a situation with the quarterbacks in the class above me. They're going to wait to see how that plays out. Then, they'll see. Hopefully I'll get an offer.
Iowa has been active in recruiting the St. Louis area in recent years. Orange Bowl Most Outstanding Player Adrian Clayborn hails from the city as does Marvin McNutt and Paul Chaney. Two players, Don Shumpert and Christian Kirksey, have verbally committed to the Hawkeyes in the 2010 Class.
"A.C. and all of those guys are doing good, Paul Chaney and Marvin McNutt," Suntrup said. "They're doing real well up there. They're starting to recruit St. Louis. Our guys are having a lot of success there. Any place where St. Louis guys are having success you have to be interested in them."
Suntrup has a plan in place for his recruitment.
"I'm starting to pick and choose some junior days I'd like to attend," he said. "I'm hoping to make a decision maybe before my senior season. I as thinking maybe that first week of school or in the summer."
