An emerging linebacker in the 2011 recruiting class recently picked up a scholarship offer from Iowa. Deryck Gildon, a 6-foot-2, 205-pounder from Arlington (Texas) Martin High earned second-team all-district honors after his junior season.
"He's a very rangy player," Martin Coach Bob Wager said. "We play him at or around the line of scrimmage. He's very disruptive."
While being classified as a linebacker in recruiting circles, Gildon earned all-district honors as a defensive end last fall. As a sophomore, he was named a second-team all-district linebacker.
"He uses his hands well," Wager said. "He's very physical but also has the ability to drop off into coverage. He's a terrific blitzer."
Martin reports Gildon running the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds. The school's recruiting page lists his GPA at 3.33 and a class rank of 416 of 818.
