In case you've been in a hole or out of the country, as a Hawkeye Insider you learned that something is going on in the Iowa basketball program. The rumor mill started churning on Thursday that Coach Todd Lickliter would not be retained.
It's the hot story in Hawkeye Land and HI.com will continue to follow it. I will try to provide what I hear on the topic each day. Here's what I heard on Friday:
IOWA CITY, Ia. - As I said on Thursday, I felt like Todd Lickliter being retained by Iowa seemed like a long shot. I didn't hear anything on Friday that made me change that view. If anything, sources contacted today made it appear less likely that he will be back.
I still would not call it a done deal, yet. I know that might be semantics, but there's work to be done if this separation comes to pass. I'll talk more about that in Saturday's installment.
I do believe there's truth in speculation that some Iowa players expressed their discontent with Lickliter to athletics director Gary Barta. I'm hearing a few names, but will not name them until I get more concrete verification.
I think one misconception could be that this is a majority opinion of the players. Lickliter's exit would not be seen as a positive by the incoming recruits. I also have it on pretty good authority that a coaching change would NOT be the choice of most of the returning players, especially the freshmen from the 2009-10 season.
I really get the sense that the majority of players projected to be on the roster before the speculation started feel like the program is headed in the right direction. I'm not sure they would go as far as to say they love Lickliter, but they like him and feel like he makes them better.
Coaching changes always include some drama. I have a feeling this one could be messy with some collateral damage. We'll be back tomorrow with more.
