Brust Released from Iowa Letter of Intent

The third player in four days has asked new Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery for his release from the program and it has been granted. 2010 signee Ben Brust was released from his letter of intent and has reopened his recruitment. He is thought to still be considering the Hawkeyes.

IOWA CITY, Ia. - After losing two players on Friday, 2010 signee Ben Brust asked for and was granted his release from his Iowa letter of intent.

Sophomore Aaron Fuller was released from his scholarship on Friday, the same day that '10 signee Cody Larson asked for and was granted a release from his LOI.

The Iowa staff will re-recruit Brust and Larson. Chances of getting a signature from the former is greater than the latter, sources say.

"Ben has asked for a release from his National Letter of Intent," New Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery said. "He is still very much interested in the University of Iowa. Ben would like us, as a new coaching staff, to pursue and re-recruit him. I have had encouraging conversations with Ben and enjoyed meeting him and his family. We look forward to getting to know Ben more in the recruiting process."

Iowa now has four available scholarships to use in the 2010 class if McCaffery chooses to do so. The late signing period begins this week and runs through mid-March.

Brust and Larson signed their letters of intent in November, when Todd Lickliter was the coach. Iowa fired Lickliter last month.

"After much thought I've decided to re-open my recruitment," Brust said in a statement released Monday Night. "While I have enjoyed my initial conversations with Coach McCaffery, I feel it is in my best interest to re-evaluate my options. I know the University of Iowa has a lot to offer, and I've enjoyed the times I've already been able to spend in Iowa City.

"Coach McCaffery and I are still getting to know each other, and we will continue the recruiting process. However, in order for me to explore my options, and do my due-dillegence, I've requested to get a release from my letter of intent."
