Gesell Welcomes McCaffery to Nebraska

Mike Gesell met with Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery on Tuesday night in his hometown of South Sioux City, Neb. The 2012 guard holds an Iowa offers and looks forward to getting to know McCaffery. Find out the latest on his recruitment in this premium update.

New Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery continued to rack up frequent flier miles this week as he pounded the recruiting trail during the contact period. On Tuesday, he traveled west for meetings with 2012 recruits Adam Woodbury and Mike Gesell.

I wrote a story last night on Woodbury's visit. I also caught up with Gesell, a guard from South Sioux City, Neb.

"I had talked with (McCaffery) on the phone then he came up," said Gesell, who received an offer from Iowa's previous staff. "I'm still getting to know him and what he's about. He seems like a good guy. He likes to get up and down the court, and I like that."

Gesell said that McCaffery let him know that the Iowa offer still sits on the table for him.

"It was a little bit of a surprise that Coach (Todd) Lickliter was let go, but they didn't have a good season so you could kind of see it coming," Gesell said. "You look at schools for a coach, but also for academics and other things they have to offer. I'm looking forward to getting to know Coach McCaffery."

Gesell plays AAU basketball for Martin Brothers with Woodbury and Marcus Paige, another Class of 2012 guard with a high ceiling and an Iowa offer.

"Yeah, we're all pretty tight," Gesell said. "We like to hang out and we all play well together. It could happen (that they all end up at the same college), but I don't know for sure. I won't solely make a decision based on that, but it would be a bonus."

Gesell holds offers from Iowa, Nebraska, Creighton, Northern Iowa and Iowa State.

"I want to go to a place where there's good chemistry with the players and coaches," Gesell said. "I'm just going through the process, weighing my options and looking for the right fit."
