Head Coach Hal Wasson is the man who has lead Davis onto the football field the entire time as a Carroll Dragon.
When Hal Wasson arrived in 2007, the team had gone 79-1 in the past five years under Todd Dodge. The Dragons had won 5A state titles in four of the past five seasons ('02, '04, '05, '06). Although Wasson hasn't met with the same enormous success of his predecessor, in his first four seasons Wasson has won at an 80-percent clip and is coming off his longest run in the playoffs in 2010. Will Davis played an integral role in that team's accomplishment.
"Last year Will became a starter for us," Wasson said. "He's a young man of high character and intelligence and became one of our team leaders. He plays the game very physically. On his tackling ability, athleticism, and ball instincts, Will is a top-tier Division 1 prospect."
Davis (No. 35) made 10 tackles in the Dragons' opening win (38-31) against Copperas Cove from the Ft. Hood area. A year ago they lost to Cove by three touchdowns in Dragon opener.
"The first thing you have to say about Will is what a fine young man he is," Wasson said. "His work ethic is impeccable. If he's weight training, in practice, or in a game, Will's not going to be outworked by anyone. In the classroom he's an exceptional student. He's one of the best kids I've ever coached."
Wasson coached at Keller Fossil Ridge for four years before taking the football program at Southlake Carroll. He was the running backs coach on the Dragons' 2002 state championship team. Wasson has seen a lot of top talent in his many years coaching in the Dallas area and thinks Davis can rank highly among the Dragons many Division 1 success stories.
"It's a great find for Kansas State," Wasson said on Davis' commitment to the program. "I believe he'll do fine there and represent the school in a positive manner. With football he's only going to get better. My opinion is his best football days are in front of him. The sky's the limit for Will Davis' future."
The Dragons were knocked off in the quarterfinals or Regional 1 final (Texas 5A Division II) by Denton Guyer last season. Davis would finish the year with close to 130 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, one sack, and two fumble recoveries.
After going 6-37 in four seasons at North Texas, Todd Dodge was let go after the 2010 season. He's now the Quarterbacks coach at Pittsburgh for former Allen High School head coach Todd Graham.
This is Wasson's fifth season at Southlake Carroll. With players like Davis and junior quarterback Kenny Hill he has reason for optimism in 2011. Next up for the Dragons is L.D. Bell from Hurst, Texas.
