Signee Spotlight: Alauna Finau
"I went up there on an official visit in early March," said Alauna Finau on visiting Kansas State. "It was good to meet all of the coaches and players. My host for the weekend was Taylor Godinet. I met a lot of the players and spent some time with Manase Foketi and John Sua.
"Kansas State was my dream school. I like the way the program is run and how they do things there. Most of all I like the education. Their players have one of the highest graduation rates, so that was a big reason I wanted to go there. Coach Clements was my recruiter. I spent some time with him going over plays and schemes. He's a real cool guy."
After graduating from Dominguez High School in Compton, Calif. in 2010, Finau thought his playing days were finished until he received a call from Cerritos College.
"I wasn't thinking a whole lot of playing Division 1 football after high school," Finau said. "Mark Schulist, the defensive line coach at Cerritos, told me he thought I'd be a good fit in their program. He said he knew I could do something on the field and that I should come in and start working.
"I didn't think I'd do as good [at Cerritos] as I did. I improved as a pass rusher and using the combination of my speed and power to get around blockers."
Finau had 36 tackles, six sacks, 21 quarterback hurries, two pass deflections, and a fumble recovery in 2011 for the Cerritos Falcons. He was named Second Team All-Northern Conference. Finau says he's eager to get to Manhattan to compete at the next level.
"After the spring semester I'll be able to transfer and be at Kansas State at the beginning of June," said Finau. "Coach Joe Bob and I talked about playing defensive end instead of inside, but we'll see about that when I get there.
"I'm just going to take things one step at a time. I want to show the coaches I'm deserving of this scholarship and can play a little Division 1 football."
Finau's brother, John, was set to play for Kansas State out of El Camino College in 2006, but didn't meet the qualifications and went to New Mexico State.
Finau says he's staying busy this spring with schoolwork and helping his father with his construction company. He comes from a big family with nine brothers and three sisters. At Kansas State, Finau plans on majoring in Criminology.
