With limited spots left in the 2014 recruiting class, the SMU coaching staff will look to fill key needs with the remaining scholarships available.
One of those needs is a defensive lineman, and Anthony Villalobos may be able to plug a much-needed hole from the Mustangs. The Keller Fossil Ridge product has begun to receive interest from high profile teams, but holds an SMU offer and remains interested in the Mustangs.
Villalobos, who stands at 6-foot-2, 275-pounds, likes how SMU is close to home and has been impressed with the lead man of the SMU program-June Jones.
"SMU is right here at home, which is nice. They offer a really good education and it is a program that is on the rise," he said. "I like the head coach a lot, he seems pretty relaxed."
Villalobos, who also holds offers from Minnesota, North Texas and Tulsa, said he doesn't expect to make a decision until after football season, but that could change after he visits the Hilltop, something the SMU coaches, particularly defensive coordinator Tom Mason, have been urging him to do.
"We talk a lot over email," he said, "They keep saying how they want me to come to visit in the fall and watch a practice to learn more."
Although SMU is essentially in Villalobos's backyard, he said proximity to home is not the most important factor in his recruitment, but rather education and relationship with the coaches. "Getting a good education and a good coaching staff that treats their players the right way is very important," he said.
As his final high school football season fast approaches, Villalobos stressed the importance of being in great shape, not just for high school, but to be ready for college as well.
"I'm trying to be in the best shape I can. I've been hitting the weight room hard to get bigger and stronger any way I can." he said, "I'm also working on explosion to help with running down plays from behind."
At 6-foot-2, 275-pounds, Villalobos could slide inside and become a nose tackles in SMU's 3-4 scheme. The three-star prospect recorded 87 tackles and 11 sacks for Keller Fossil Ridge last season.
