K-State running back Darren Sproles and fullback Travis Wilson sauntered into Tuesday's press conference showing no effects of injuries that sidelined both players for the second half of the Wildcats' 41-5 win over Troy State.
Sproles was helped to the locker room after falling awkwardly on his left leg, while Wilson was shaken up on a play late in the second quarter.
Just two days later, however, Sproles was back in action.
"He didn‘t sit out anything," running
backs coach Michael Smith said of Sproles' Monday practice. "He went through all my drills and he looked exactly the same. I actually got mad at him stretching. I said, ‘I think you just didn't want to play against Troy State.'"
Sproles still leads the Wildcats in rushing with 34 carries for 224 yards and two touchdowns. That puts him on pace to break his own single-season rushing record of 1,465 yards. After two games in 2002, Sproles had gained only 186 yards.
Wilson, meanwhile, said he could have returned had the Troy State game been closer. The fullback was instead replaced by backups Ayo Saba and Victor Mann.
Regardless, both players will be available for Saturday's game, which could prove even more important when considering K-State running backs Danny Morris, Carlos Alsup and Ayo Saba gained only 19 yards on eight carries against the Trojans.
Morris said seeing Sproles and Wilson go down didn't affect him, however. He simply had to step into the role and assume the duties.
Further compounding problems is the fact sophomore backup Carlos Alsup may be out for the season. Sources close to the program have indicated an ACL injury, and Alsup was seen walking on campus wearing a brace on his knee.
"We just look at it like one of our soldiers got wounded," Morris said. "You got to pick up the slack for one of our wounded. I've taken a lot more reps (in practice), but it's basically been the same preparation it's been the whole year."
